Talking in a focus group was highly beneficial. It enabled us to discuss our initial ideas and develop them by bouncing ideas off of each other.

Below shows research I conducted on the target audience of the Indie Pop genre. This was advantageous as I now know to to approach the target audience with my music video, by knowing what the age group is and what they enjoy doing.
I have decided to choose my song “Fall Down” for the music video.
The overall meaning of the song is about being rejected from society and trying to escape from it. The deeper meaning of the song portrays a girl being in love with a boy she shouldn’t be, and is being judged by society. I am going to reflect the lyrics in the song in the music video. The song falls within the genre 'Indie Pop' therefore I am going to have to complete research on my target audience and the codes and conventions of Indie Pop music videos. Lyrics: Powerpoint enabled me to create three moodboards, brainstorming all the ideas I have thought music video’s that would go with my original songs. I have briefly annotated each picture in ways that it could relate to the storyline of my music video. This was the moodboard I created for my song ‘Fall Down’. Moodboard for 'XO'. Moodboard for 'Afternoon'.
I used the website bubbl.us to brainstorm ideas of songs for the music video, and ideas of visuals, shots and locations. This was helpful in terms or visualising my ideas and seeing them all together. It was also helpful to write my ideas down to see if they actually work or not.
TRANSCRIPT:
In order to practice lip-syncing, I made a short music video to the song ‘Catch and Release’ by Matt Simons. During shooting, I made sure that the song was played out loud so that myself and the actor could hear the lyrics of the song and when they should sing. I also made sure that the actor actually sang the lyrics instead of miming so that it would look more realistic. I believe these techniques are vital in order to perfect lip-syncing. Furthermore, this allowed me to practise editing on final cut pro, by matching the music to the video through looking at sound waves.
I have designed the logo for my production company "Sorting House Records" using the site PicMonkey, as it is very easy to use to create basic designs.
The logo contains the outline of a clip art house around the text "Sorting House Records" and a vinyl record used as the letter "O" in "House". I found that doing this made the logo look more professional rather than placing the record randomly.
Below I created a two minute time-lapse video showing the process of creating the final result.
I have also created a more simplistic logo that I will use on the digipak and magazine poster for the ancillary tasks, so that it is more simplistic and easy to recognise.
I decided to create a test shoot whereby I could experiment with three-point lighting. I did this in preparation for creating my music video, so that I could familiarize myself with the technique so I do not have any issues on filming days.
Below is a video of examples of shots with different lighting using my friend Molly Hackney as the subject. I also explain how lighting can affect the dimensions of a subject and how I managed to create a three dimensional subject in a two dimensional image
Below shows a video I created showing the different shot types, and an explanation of why I did this task.
Transcript: In preparation for my main task I thought that I would practice shot types and create this test footage before I start to create my storyboard. Obviously the location of this footage and the actor both have no relevance to my final product. I have included various shot types and camera movements that I am planning on using in my music video.
The video also includes a dolly shot, whereby I placed the camera on an office chair and pushed a chair across the flat surface. Other techniques I used using household items to create a successful shot included tying a rubber band around the handle of a tripod and pulling the band in one direction, to create a pan. Techniques like this come in extreme use when you don’t have the money to pay for expensive equipment. Some other techniques are shown in this video from Film Riot below, which I plan on using in my music video Having the MTV Video Music Award's last month was extremely beneficial, as I am able to take inspiration from music videos that won certain awards, and apply them to ideas I am forming for the music video I am going to create. The 'Video of The Year' award went to Taylor Swift's music video 'Bad Blood'. Reasons as to why a filmmaker can take inspiration from this was because of the storyline of the music video, as it grips the audience and makes them want to carry on watching. I want to try and replicate this with the music video that I will create, as I want my audience to enjoy and carry on watching the video.
Editing is also something filmmakers need to pay close attention too, as editing to the beat of the music is crucial in making a successful music video. Beyonce's music video to the song '7/11' won the 'Best Editing' award. This was because everything was perfectly in time, and all the shots moved smoothly from one to another. Again, I am taking inspiration from this and am going to edit to the beat as best as I can, and create smooth transitions for my music video. |
